Dear Csilla,

Two more days and Halloween will be here! The official start of the sugar-gorging season.

Halloween used to scare me. Just the thought of my kids coming home with all that junky candy would send shivers through my spine. But things have changed.

Being sugar sensitive I have long ago given up buying candy for trick-or-treaters. When I used to, I always ended up eating them all by myself before the day had even arrived. Then I was one cranky, moody and miserable person to be around.

In the past years we were able to take the focus off the candy.  My kids now  have lots of fun just by thinking up new costumes each year, and seeing how they can top the one they had created the year before. We look forward to going pumpkin picking with friends and enjoying the outdoor activities the season has to offer.

I am so proud of Sophia this year. She has come up with a great idea for her costume  and without much assistance she has created it all by herself. Creativity like this is the best nourishment of all. Stay tuned for photos in my next newsletter.

Simply Delicious Fall Cleanse

small changes"I just wanted to write to thank you for the wonderful Spring Cleanse.  I thought it was easy, and so delicious!  The recipes were great-so yummy, and many of them will remain favorites even now that the cleanse has ended.  The discipline of the cleanse helped me get back on track with healthy eating, and it jump-started my weight loss again.  An added benefit I didn't expect is that my joints don't hurt-clearly I'm sensitive to something, and I can play detective as I put things back into my diet and figure out just what I should avoid.  Taking time out to focus on health and healthy eating is such a good idea; I have more energy and better focus, as well as a renewed awareness of how the things I put in my mouth impact my every day life.  Thanks!"

Many of the above symptoms have low thyroid and iodine deficiency at their root. There are many reasons why this gland is suddenly not functioning. Learn about "endocrine disrupters" in our food and the environment that inhibit thyroid health and set the body up for failure. Learn how proper diet and lifestyle can protect us, and which "healthy" foods actually slow down or speed up thyroid function.

7 Tips for a Healthier Halloween

1. Feed everyone well (including yourself!).
This will keep the energy levels high, blood sugar levels stable and your stomachs satisfied. Make sure you include ample protein, veggies and fiber.

I usually roast an organic, free-range chicken, serve it with some brown rice, roasted squash, or sweet potatoes, broccoli with garlic and a fresh salad with lemon juice and olive oil. This is THE most important step you can take. Having a good meal will make kids less inclined to eat too many candies. The meal will also buffer the effects of the sugar. (Sugar eaten on an empty stomach has a far greater effect.) Note: if you are too busy with fixing up your little one's costume, make something ahead of time and just reheat.

2. Bring along some healthy snacks. For instance, you could fill plastic bags with mixed nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins or slice up an apple and bring almond or peanut butter for a healthy dip.

3. Have them drink plenty of water (and not juice). This will help flush out the toxins and hydrate the cells.This also aids with sugar-related headaches as well.

4. Post trick-or-treating, give your children some protein to help with their "sugar highs". Peanut butter (with no extra sugar), or some nuts and seeds, a piece of leftover chicken, a bowl of chili etc.

5. Give them extra Vitamin C to enhance their immune system for a few weeks. (Sugar has a tendency to lower one's immunity immediately).

6. Pass out non-edible treats and toys like glow necklaces, wiggly worms, creepy fingers, tattoos, pencils and erasers etc.

7. If your child is irritable or agitated, try a blend of chamomile and lavender tea to help calm their nerves. You can sweeten it with honey or stevia.

Bonus Tip:

The following has worked great at my house for years: at the end of the evening, we let our children pick out about 10 pieces of chocolate for themselves to eat. Then the rest of the candy will  be left out for the "Candy Fairy" who comes at night like the tooth fairy and takes the kids' candy, leaving toys in her wake. My kids are 13 and 10 years old and they still look forward to the surprise gift. (That reminds me get them ASAP.)

Recipes

Roasted Yam Purée with Coconut Milk

This dish is creamy orange bliss. Often confused with sweet potatoes, yams contain more natural sugar and have a higher moisture content. When buying yams, select smaller ones (they're sweeter) and ones that are unwrinkled with few blemishes. If you can't find yams, you can substitute sweet potatoes.

Ingredients:
4 pounds yams, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
1-2  tablespoons pure maple syrup
6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Coarse sea salt

1/2 cup coconut milk, fresh or canned, warmed, plus more if needed

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375EF. Lightly oil a baking dish or roasting pan.
2. In a large bowl, combine the yams, maple syrup, olive oil, and 1/2 teaspoon sea salt.
3. Toss well.
4. Transfer yams to the prepared pan and roast for 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until slightly crisp on the edges.
5. Remove from the oven. In a food processor, combine the yams with the warmed coconut milk.
6. Purée, adding more coconut milk for your desired consistency, and transfer to a serving bowl
.

Candied Apples

 candid apples

We saw lots of candied apples at the farm we visited this weekend. I peeked at the ingredient label on the box that held the caramel coating and it was loaded with artificial dies, unhealthy hydrogenated oils and corn syrup.

To make your own candied apples, dip them in honey or brown rice syrup and then roll the glazed apples in ground up graham crackers or small chunks of granola, chopped up raisins, figs, dates, or calcium rich ground walnuts and almonds.
